Update 30 October · 04:36 UTC

Binance now clarifies that deposits operate normally. Withdrawals remain paused; the company expects to resume them within 48 hours of its new statement. This is an estimate, not a guarantee. The original context is explained below.

What happened?

Binance is a platform where people buy, sell and hold crypto. BBC and CoinDesk reported unusual movements from its wallets on 29 October. Their early estimates differed. The investigation is still developing.

Binance’s 30 October update estimates the impact at about $6.3 billion and points to a possibly compromised employee laptop. These are the company’s preliminary findings, not a completed independent investigation.

What does Binance promise?

Binance says it will cover all losses using its protection fund and company money. It also says customer funds are safe. That is Binance’s commitment; it does not mean the investigation is finished or every affected asset has already been recovered.

What does “frozen” mean?

Binance says around $3 billion in affected assets has been frozen with help from partners. Freezing is intended to stop those assets being moved further. It is different from returning money to users.

Do not add every number in the headlines together. Estimates of the impact and amounts frozen measure different things, and the same assets can appear in several reports. A final loss figure may change.

What changed about the services?

Earlier Binance communication described both deposits and withdrawals as paused. Its service update on 30 October at 04:36 UTC says deposits operate normally. Withdrawals remain paused during security work. The pause does not by itself prove that an individual customer has lost their balance.

A simple comparison: if a shop closes its cash desk to investigate a problem, the closure and the eventual financial loss are two separate questions. This comparison explains the pause; it is not evidence about Binance’s finances.

What can you do now?

Open the genuine Binance app or website yourself for service updates. Do not follow a stranger’s “unlock your money” link. Never send a password, login code or wallet recovery phrase to someone claiming to help.

The final cause and net loss were not settled at the original source check. Binance now estimates withdrawals will resume within 48 hours of its new service statement; await confirmation of an actual reopening.
