Getting Started
Right address, no balance? Do not miss this extra field.
You copy the address carefully and choose the correct network. Ready to send? Sometimes one detail is still missing: a memo or destination tag. That small extra field can determine whether a receiving service knows the deposit belongs to your account.

A building is not an apartment
Think of an apartment building. A street address gets a parcel to the right building, but someone still needs to know which mailbox it belongs in. Some crypto platforms work similarly: one receiving address serves several customers.
A memo or destination tag supplies the extra information the service uses to match a payment to a customer. It is not a password or recovery phrase. Nor does it replace the address or network. The correct combination matters.
Not every transfer asks for the same details
For XRP, the field is often called a destination tag; on Stellar, you will encounter a memo. Formats can differ: a number, text or another supported type. Use exactly the details and type shown by the receiving service.
The destination determines whether the field is needed. A self-custody wallet often needs no memo, while a platform may require one. Do not rely on what worked for a previous transfer or another asset. Some address formats embed the extra information in the address itself; follow both services’ current instructions.
A fictional example
Noor wants to send a supported asset to her platform account. The receiving screen shows an address and a required memo. Her sending app initially displays only an address field. She locates the memo setting and compares both details before confirming.
If she entered only the address, the blockchain could process the payment without the platform automatically updating her balance. “Sent” and “allocated to my account” are separate checks. This example deliberately contains no real payment details.
A quick check before sending
Open the receiving page yourself in the official app or website. Check the asset, network, address, memo or tag, and any minimum deposit. Copy details from the same current instruction. Do not invent a name or random number to get past a required field.
On the final screen, check that every necessary field has actually carried over. Do not assume a QR code also filled in the memo. If the sending app lacks a required option, stop and consult official guidance before transferring funds.
A small test can help when the services allow it. Account for minimum deposits and fees, and check that the receiving account was credited. A successful test does not establish that a platform or investment is safe.
Already sent with a missing or wrong memo?
Do not immediately send the same payment again. Keep the transaction ID, asset, network, amount and the instructions you followed. Contact the receiving service through its official route. It can explain whether investigation or recovery is possible.
Recovery is not guaranteed and may involve conditions or fees. An unknown helper cannot simply reverse a confirmed blockchain payment. Do not share a recovery phrase, password or login code. Practise further with the free website quizzes at three levels.
